Updated September 3, 2012: Made this today for an afternoon snack and added cucumber and green chilis as recommended by my sister in law. I also finally got to take a picture to post!
I was hungry this afternoon and it was too early for dinner, so Tejas taught me how to make jhal moodi. It’s a street food from Kolkata and uses this masala which is so good! I can’t explain it, it’s peppery and had this rich almost smokey taste, but I can’t figure out what it is. We ate it so fast that I forgot to take a picture! I’m so sad! I’ll have to take one next time.
3 cups puffed rice
1 medium potato diced, cooked in salt water and cooled
1/2 onion diced
3/4 cup chopped cucumber
1/3 cup cilantro chopped
1-2 green chilis thinly sliced
2 handfuls roasted peanuts
1 tablespoon jhal moodi masala
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon mustard oil
Juice from 1/2 of a lime
Salt
- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and eat up!
Aryan, that sounds yummy! I want to try it but I don’t have the jhal moodi masala. I guess hard to find that at Indian store here? Any tips?
Hey Falu, I’ll get you some when we go to India! I haven’t seen it here at all. I found this recipe for the masala: dry roast 3 tsp jeera, 1 tsp of coriander seeds and 2 red chilis and grind, but I feel like there is something else in there. It is so rich smelling!
Love your blog. i’m definitely going to try some of the recipes. as for the smoky taste in the jhal moori masala it comes from ‘bhuja jeeas’ which is dry roasting jeera (cumin seeds) and then grinding them. you can use this in most chaats that you make.
Thank you Simrun! I love that smokey taste, I had no idea that it was jeera!
Started to feel hungry reading your post on jhaal mudi……we also add cucumbers, green chillies for extra spice and sev for crunchiness.
Ooo sounds good! I will try that next time!
