Classic Margaritas w/ an Orange Twist

For Cinco de Mayo we had a few couples over for a little potluck. We made classic margaritas w/ an orange twist using fresh squeezed lemons, limes, and oranges. The measurements below are after fussing around a few times. First I weakened them a little cause they were so strong! Then they seemed TOO weak. This recipe I think is about right. We also made my mom’s wonderful cheese enchiladas and homemade Mexican refried beans.

8 cups tequila
4 cups triple sec
2 cups fresh squeezed lime juice (I used 14 limes – they were fairly big limes)
2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice (I used 14 lemons)
2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice (I used 8 oranges)
Sugar syrup (optional)
Salt for the salt rim (we get the flakey salt meant for margaritas cause I love salt!)

  1. Chill the tequila and triple sec in the freezer a few hours ahead of time.
  2. Squeeze the lemons, limes, and oranges (same day–some people swear that you need to do this right before serving, but that is way too much trouble).
  3. Right before serving mix the tequila, triple sec, and juices. Add a little sugar syrup if it needs a little sweetening. We used a punch bowl and mixed this all with ice.

How to make sugar syrup: Mix one cup of sugar with one cup of water in  a bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, stir, then microwave for another minute and stir. Chill.
