I think it had something like 10 garlic cloves and 5 tablespoons of black pepper! It was so over the top, I new had to try it. And I have no idea why it took me so long!<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 120px; height: 240px;\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"240\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"http:\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;ID=OneJS&amp;OneJS=1&amp;source=ac&amp;ref=qf_sp_asin_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=mayabugs-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=1452101248&amp;asins=1452101248&amp;show_border=false&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true&amp;MarketPlace=US\" width=\"320\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">I did tone it down quite a bit (less garlic and pepper), but there is still a lot of both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Sweet soy sauce is really amazing. We have both an Indonesian <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00886AVOI\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00886AVOI&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=mayabugs-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">kecap manis<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=mayabugs-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00886AVOI\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">and a Thai version like <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001BR3WLK\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B001BR3WLK&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=mayabugs-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">this one<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0(I wanted to test the difference). They are pretty similar in that they are both thick and molassesy, but I would say the kecap manis was saltier. I think they are pretty interchangeable for our tastes.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">I skipped the sugar since the sweet soy sauce is sweet enough for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You know, I am actually not even a big black pepper fan, I skip it often in recipes, not wanting to have that little background taste of pepper. But I have come to realize that I do love pepper as long as it is in the right place, even if there is tons of it!<\/p>\n<p>1-2 tablespoons butter<br \/>\n6 medium\/big shallots (~6 ounces) thinly sliced<br \/>\n5 garlic cloves smashed and chopped<br \/>\n1 1\/2 tablespoons ginger<br \/>\n2 Thai red chilis<br \/>\n2 tablespoons olive oil<br \/>\n1 package tofu (15.5 ounces) chopped into little squares and pressed dry<br \/>\n2 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (Indonesian\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00886AVOI\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00886AVOI&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=mayabugs-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">kecap manis<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=mayabugs-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00886AVOI\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0or a Thai sweet soy sauce like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001BR3WLK\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B001BR3WLK&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=mayabugs-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sweet Soy Sauce Healthy Boy Brand<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=mayabugs-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001BR3WLK\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<br \/>\n1 tablespoon dark soy sauce (I used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001FB6B0G\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B001FB6B0G&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=mayabugs-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pearl River Bridge Superior Dark Soy Sauce<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=mayabugs-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B001FB6B0G\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>)<br \/>\n2 tablespoons regular soy sauce or tamari<br \/>\n1 tablespoon fresh crushed peppercorns (I started to use a mortal and pestle, gave up and used a coffee grinder for a couple of pushes!)<br \/>\nSalt<br \/>\n2 green onions sliced<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Heat the butter in a saute pan and cook the shallots, garlic, ginger and chilis over medium heat until softened and browned.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile heat the oil in a separate skillet and add the tofu squares. Let brown on one side then turn. Keep turning until a few sides are browned. I flipped each using a finger.<\/li>\n<li>Back to the shallot pan: add the soy sauces, peppercorns and salt to taste. Throw in the tofu and toss to coat with the sauce.
