So I thought it was time to make my own. What a refreshing change!<\/p>\n<p>Coconut chutney is a must for South Indian <a title=\"wikipedia idli\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Idli\" target=\"_blank\">idlis<\/a>\u00a0and <a title=\"wikipedia dosa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dosa\" target=\"_blank\">dosas<\/a>, a popular breakfast food. <a title=\"wikipedia idli\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Idli\" target=\"_blank\">Idlis <\/a>are steamed cakes made from fermented rice and lentil batter. <a title=\"wikipedia dosa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dosa\" target=\"_blank\">Dosas <\/a>are crepes also made from fermented rice and lentil batter. I have yet to master the batter and <a title=\"Last Minute Soft Idlis\" href=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/indian-recipes\/last-minute-soft-idlis\/\">use a box mix for idlis<\/a> (they come out super soft!) and refrigerated batter for dosa. One day, one day, maybe I&#8217;ll have my own recipe for homemade batter \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>The other thing you need with idlis and dosas is sambar. Here is a recipe for <a title=\"Quick Sambar\" href=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/indian-recipes\/quick-sambar\/\" target=\"_blank\">pretty easy sambar<\/a> and <a title=\"Sambar for Idlis and Dosas\" href=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/indian-recipes\/idli-sambhar\/\" target=\"_blank\">here is one that is a bit more complicated and doesn&#8217;t use sambar powder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This recipe for coconut chutney is adapted from <a title=\"hotel style coconut chutney\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sailusfood.com\/2012\/06\/27\/hotel-style-coconut-chutney\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sailu&#8217;s Food&#8217;s recipe for Hotel Style Coconut Chutney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>1 tablespoon chana dal<br \/>\n1\/2 cup shredded coconut (fresh or defrosted frozen)<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon minced ginger<br \/>\n1 green chili chopped<br \/>\n~6 tablespoons water<br \/>\nSalt<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon coconut oil<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon mustard seeds<br \/>\n3-4 curry leaves<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Roast chana dal in a pan until lightly brown.<\/li>\n<li>In a small food processor blend coconut, dal, ginger, green chili, water and a little salt. Pour into a little bowl.<\/li>\n<li>Heat oil in a tadka or other small pan. Add the mustard seeds. Once they start to pop, add the curry leaves.
