This is a simple tadka dal using toor dal. Tadka just means frying spices in oil or butter\/ghee. In this recipe, I cooked the onions, garlic, ginger and tomatoes in the pressure cooker with the dal and then made a tadka of cumin seeds and dried red chilis. I think of this dal as more North Indian since I didn&#8217;t use mustard seeds or curry leaves. You could also cook the dal separately in the pressure cooker and then cook the rest separately and add the dal later. I find this way to be a little faster. I like this dal best with rice, yogurt and tangy tomato pickle.<\/p>\n<p>1 tablespoon oil<br \/>\n1 onion sliced<br \/>\n2 garlic cloves chopped<br \/>\n1 piece ginger chopped<br \/>\n3 green chilis chopped<br \/>\n1 tomato chopped<br \/>\n1 teaspoon turmeric<br \/>\n1 cup toor dal<br \/>\n1\/2 tablespoon oil<br \/>\n1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)<br \/>\n4 dried red chilis<br \/>\nSalt<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Heat oil in a pressure cooker then saute the onions until they start to get translucent, adding the garlic, ginger, and chilis part way through cooking. You don&#8217;t need to cook them too long, just a little.<\/li>\n<li>Add the tomatoes, turmeric, dal and water to 1\/4 &#8211; 1\/3 the way up the cooker.<\/li>\n<li>Heat over high until the first whistle, turn to medium and cook for about 8 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Heat the rest of the oil in a tadka or other small pan and cook the cumin seeds and red chilis until browned.<\/li>\n<li>Add the cumin and red chilis and salt to the dal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/indian-recipes\/dals_pulses\/tadka-dal\/attachment\/tadka-dal\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3161\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3161\" title=\"Tadka Dal\" src=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Tadka-Dal-1024x764.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Tadka-Dal-1024x764.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Tadka-Dal-400x298.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"social-likes social-likes_notext\" data-title=\"Tadka Dal\" data-url=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/tadka-dal\/\" data-counters=\"yes\"><div class=\"facebook\" title=\"Share link on Facebook\"><\/div><div class=\"plusone\" title=\"Share link on Google+\"><\/div><div class=\"twitter\" data-via=\"mayabugs\" title=\"Share link on Twitter\"><\/div><div class=\"pinterest\" title=\"Share image on Pinterest\" data-media=\"\"><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know I know, another dal recipe, but there are so many ways to make dal!
