Ever since then I&#8217;ve been curious to try a dry version of this curry with something else besides kadala (black channa). I had a feeling it would make a yummy green bean subj so tonight I gave it a go and we really enjoyed it! We ate it with mustard seed rice and roti. It is very spicy so serve with yogurt!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/indian-recipes\/subjis\/south-indian-green-bean-subji-mustard-seed-rice\/attachment\/south-indian-green-beans-mustard-seed-rice\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2315\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2315\" title=\"South Indian Green Beans &amp; Mustard Seed Rice\" src=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/South-Indian-Green-Beans-Mustard-Seed-Rice-1024x733.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/South-Indian-Green-Beans-Mustard-Seed-Rice-1024x733.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/South-Indian-Green-Beans-Mustard-Seed-Rice-400x286.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">South Indian Green Bean Subji<\/span><br \/>\n1 tablespoon oil<br \/>\n5-6 curry leaves<br \/>\n1 onion chopped<br \/>\n1 tablespoon ginger minced<br \/>\n10-12 red chilis<br \/>\n1\/2 cup desiccated coconut<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon turmeric<br \/>\n2 tablespoons coriander powder<br \/>\n1 teaspoon garam masala<br \/>\n1 large tomato chopped<br \/>\n1.5 pounds green beans chopped in little pieces<br \/>\nSalt<br \/>\n1 teaspoon oil<br \/>\n1 teaspoon mustard seeds<br \/>\n6-7 curry leaves<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Heat oil in a medium sockpan and add curry leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Then add the onions and cook until translucent.<\/li>\n<li>Add the red chilis, ginger, and coconut and stir until the coconut starts to brown.<\/li>\n<li>Add the turmeric, coriander powder and garam masala.<\/li>\n<li>Add the tomato and cook until it softens.<\/li>\n<li>Blend this mixture in a food processor or blender with a little water.<\/li>\n<li>Add the mixture back to the pan with the green beans, salt and a little water and cover. Stir occasionally adding a little water when necessary until the green beans are soft. Most of the liquid should be evaporated in the end.<\/li>\n<li>In a tadka or other small pan heat the last teaspoon of oil.<\/li>\n<li>Add the mustard seeds and when they start to pop, add the curry leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Pour onto green beans and stir.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mustard Seed Rice<\/span><br \/>\n1 cup basmati rice (raw)<br \/>\n1 teaspoon oil<br \/>\n1 teaspoon mustard seeds<br \/>\n6-7 curry leaves<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cook rice in a rice cooker or pan (1 cup rice with ~2 cups water)<\/li>\n<li>Heat oil in a skillet and add mustard seeds.<\/li>\n<li>Once they start to pop, add the curry leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Add the rice and a little salt and stir altogether.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"social-likes social-likes_notext\" data-title=\"South Indian Green Bean Subji & Mustard Seed Rice\" data-url=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/south-indian-green-bean-subji-mustard-seed-rice\/\" data-counters=\"yes\"><div class=\"facebook\" title=\"Share link on Facebook\"><\/div><div class=\"plusone\" title=\"Share link on Google+\"><\/div><div class=\"twitter\" data-via=\"mayabugs\" title=\"Share link on Twitter\"><\/div><div class=\"pinterest\" title=\"Share image on Pinterest\" data-media=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/South-Indian-Green-Beans-Mustard-Seed-Rice-1024x733.jpg\"><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A long while back I tried out&nbsp;this great kadala curry&nbsp;from Spicy Chilly to go along with appams.
