Last week I tried out\u00a0<a title=\"Black-Eyed Peas in a Spicy Goan Curry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.culinate.com\/books\/collections\/all_books\/5+Spices*2C+50+Dishes\/black-eyed_peas_in_a_spicy_goan_curry\" target=\"_blank\">Black-Eyed Peas in a Spicy Goan Curry<\/a> from Ruta Kahate&#8217;s 50 Spices, 50 Dishes and I really enjoyed it. This is what I do, I get some idea for an ingredient, pick up the ingredient, and go searching. This Goan style black-eyed pea dish is really simple, but the coconut milk gives it a little something. I used more tomatoes because I wanted it tomatoey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/indian-recipes\/dals_pulses\/goan-black-eyed-peas\/attachment\/goan-black-eyed-peas-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2537\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2537\" title=\"Goan Black Eyed Peas\" src=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Goan-Black-Eyed-Peas-1024x921.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Goan-Black-Eyed-Peas-1024x921.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Goan-Black-Eyed-Peas-400x359.jpg 400w, https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Goan-Black-Eyed-Peas.jpg 1733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1 cup dried black-eyed peas (or 2 cans)<br \/>\n1 tablespoon oil<br \/>\n1 more tablespoon oil<br \/>\n1 onion chopped<br \/>\n1-2 garlic cloves minced<br \/>\n1 teaspoon ginger minced<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon turmeric<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon chili powder<br \/>\n1 teaspoon coriander ground<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon cumin ground<br \/>\n1 cup crushed tomato<br \/>\n1 teaspoons sugar<br \/>\nSalt<br \/>\n2 cups water (about)<br \/>\n1 cup canned coconut milk<br \/>\nGood squeeze of lemon<br \/>\nCilantro leaves chopped<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Add the black-eyed peas, ~one tablespoon of oil, and ~4 cups water to the pressure cooker. I read that the oil will keep the beans from frothing out the top. Sometime I&#8217;ll write about my trials with the pressure cooker. I think it just takes practice to get the hang of it. You can also soak the peas for 6-8 hours, and just cook for 10 more minutes before adding the coconut milk. I happen to never know what we&#8217;re going to be in the mood for, hence no soaking.<\/li>\n<li>Cook for 8 minutes past the whistle, put the pressure cooker under cold running water until all the steam comes out, open and drain out the peas.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile heat the rest of the oil in a medium saucepan.<\/li>\n<li>Add the onion and saute until it starts to get translucent.<\/li>\n<li>Add the garlic and ginger and cook until they are soft.<\/li>\n<li>Add the spices and cook for a minute.<\/li>\n<li>Add the tomato, sugar, and salt, and cook for a minute.<\/li>\n<li>Add the water and black eyed peas and cook for a about 10 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Add the coconut milk and cook for another 5-10 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Add the lemon juice and cilantro, stir and serve.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"social-likes social-likes_notext\" data-title=\"Goan Black-Eyed Peas\" data-url=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/goan-black-eyed-peas\/\" data-counters=\"yes\"><div class=\"facebook\" title=\"Share link on Facebook\"><\/div><div class=\"plusone\" title=\"Share link on Google+\"><\/div><div class=\"twitter\" data-via=\"mayabugs\" title=\"Share link on Twitter\"><\/div><div class=\"pinterest\" title=\"Share image on Pinterest\" data-media=\"\"><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&rsquo;ve been looking for a fun way to make black eyed peas for a while now and I finally found it!
