A popular dish is Dal Makhani which has cream, but I skipped the cream.\u00a0I did realized that what I thought was black dal from Trader Joe\u2019s probably isn\u2019t black dal, but it is still prepared in a black dal style \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/indian-recipes\/dals_pulses\/black-dal\/attachment\/black-dal-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2596\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2596\" title=\"Black Dal\" src=\"http:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Black-Dal-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Black-Dal-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Black-Dal-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2 tablespoons oil<br \/>\n1 teaspoon cumin<br \/>\n2 medium onions sliced<br \/>\n2 garlic cloves chopped<br \/>\n1 inch ginger diced<br \/>\n1\/2 box of\u00a0<a title=\"Pomi Chopped Tomatoes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pomi-Chopped-Tomatoes-26-46-Ounce\/dp\/B0005ZVOR8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pomi ChoppedTomatoes<\/a>\u00a0(or a can of diced tomatoes)<br \/>\n1 tablespoon tomato paste<br \/>\n2 teaspoons tumeric<br \/>\n1\/2 teaspoon chili powder<br \/>\n1 tablespoon coriander powder<br \/>\n1 tablespoon garam masala<br \/>\n1 package Trader Joe&#8217;s lentils (or 1-2 cups pressure cooked black dal)<br \/>\nSalt<br \/>\n2 teaspoons sugar<br \/>\nWater<br \/>\nSqueeze of lime<br \/>\n1\/4 cup chopped cilantro<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Heat oil in a pretty big sauce pan.<\/li>\n<li>Add cumin until it browns a little.<\/li>\n<li>Add onions and cook until they get slightly soft.<\/li>\n<li>Add garlic and ginger and cook all until the onions are browned and the garlic is soft.<\/li>\n<li>Add tomatoes and powdered spices.<\/li>\n<li>Add dal, salt, sugar, and water and cook down for a while.<\/li>\n<li>Add a squeeze of lime, stir and top with a little chopped cilantro.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"social-likes social-likes_notext\" data-title=\"Black Dal\" data-url=\"https:\/\/mayabugs.com\/blog\/black-dal\/\" data-counters=\"yes\"><div class=\"facebook\" title=\"Share link on Facebook\"><\/div><div class=\"plusone\" title=\"Share link on Google+\"><\/div><div class=\"twitter\" data-via=\"mayabugs\" title=\"Share link on Twitter\"><\/div><div class=\"pinterest\" title=\"Share image on Pinterest\" data-media=\"\"><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Black dal was one of the first Indian dishes my husband, Tejas, taught me.
